Choosing Grade 12 Courses for Engineering

Engineering is one of the most popular postsecondary destinations for Ontario students with strong interests in mathematics and science. If you are considering an engineering program at a Canadian university, understanding which Grade 12 courses are commonly required — and why — can help you plan your secondary school pathway more effectively.

Important Disclaimer

Admission requirements vary by university and by specific engineering program. The information in this article reflects common patterns observed across many Canadian universities, but it is not a substitute for checking current requirements directly with each institution you are considering. Universities update their requirements periodically, and students should always verify the most current information on the university's official admissions website.

Why Grade 12 Course Selection Matters for Engineering

Most Canadian university engineering programs are competitive. Admissions decisions are typically based on a combination of your Grade 12 course grades and the specific courses you have completed. Taking the right courses — and performing well in them — is essential for a competitive application.

Engineering programs draw on a strong foundation in mathematics and the physical sciences. Students who arrive at university without the appropriate secondary school preparation often find the transition significantly more difficult.

Commonly Required Grade 12 Courses

While requirements vary, the following Grade 12 University-level (U) courses appear as requirements or strong recommendations across many Canadian engineering programs:

Advanced Functions (MHF4U) is widely required for engineering admission. It builds on the functions concepts introduced in Grade 11 and provides essential preparation for university-level mathematics.

Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) is required or strongly recommended by most engineering programs. Calculus is a foundational tool in virtually every branch of engineering, and this course introduces the core concepts students will encounter in first-year university.

Physics (SPH4U) is required by the vast majority of engineering programs. Engineering is fundamentally applied physics, and a strong Grade 12 Physics foundation is considered essential.

Chemistry (SCH4U) is required by many engineering programs, particularly those in chemical, environmental, materials, and biomedical engineering. Even for programs that do not list it as a strict requirement, a strong Chemistry background is often an asset.

English (ENG4U) is required for admission to virtually all university programs in Canada, including engineering. Strong written communication skills are important throughout an engineering degree and career.

What About Mathematics of Data Management?

Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U) is a valuable course for students interested in statistics, data science, or business, but it does not substitute for Advanced Functions or Calculus and Vectors for engineering admission. Students planning to apply to engineering should prioritize MHF4U and MCV4U.

Computer Science as a Complement

Computer Science (ICS4U) is not typically listed as a formal requirement for engineering admission, but it is increasingly valued — particularly for students interested in software, computer, or electrical engineering. Familiarity with programming concepts can give students a meaningful advantage in first-year engineering courses.

Planning Your Course Pathway

If engineering is your goal, it is worth mapping out your Grade 11 and 12 course selections carefully. Many of the Grade 12 courses listed above have Grade 11 prerequisites. For example, Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) requires Advanced Functions (MHF4U) as a prerequisite or co-requisite at many schools.

Starting with the right Grade 11 courses — Functions (MCR3U), Physics (SPH3U), and Chemistry (SCH3U) — puts students in a strong position to take the full suite of recommended Grade 12 courses.

Choosing the right Grade 12 courses is one of the most impactful decisions a student can make on the path to an engineering degree. By understanding what universities commonly look for and planning your course selections accordingly, you can approach the application process with confidence. Always verify current admission requirements directly with the universities and programs you are considering, as requirements can change from year to year.
